Mambo (formerly named Mambo Open Source or MOS) is an open
source content management system (CMS) for creating and managing websites
through a simple web interface. It has attracted many users due to its ease of
use. Mambo also includes more advanced features such as page caching to improve
performance on busy sites, advanced templating techniques, and a fairly robust
API. It can also automate many tasks such as web indexing for static pages.
Mambo can provide RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs,
forums, polls, calendars, website searching, language internationalization, and
other possibilities.
Mambo won the the Best Free Software Project of the Year from UK magazine Linux
Format in 2004, and the Best Open Source Solution award from the editors of
LinuxWorld Magazine in 2005.
Mambo is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

What is Mambo?
This article will give you a better explanation of how
Mambo fits into the content management landscape.

First and foremost, Mambo is a Content Management System (CMS). It is the engine behind your website that simplifies the creation, management, and sharing of content.
There is an excellent article on How to evaluate a Content Management System (written by James Robertson) that covers the features of a good content management system in great detail.
The goal of the Mambo project is to meet most of the requirements highlighted in the above article. As each day in development goes by we are getting nearer and nearer, while at the same time building a solid core which can be extended by third party developers.
In the hands of a custom developer, this makes Mambo a powerful platform for a wide variety of Internet applications that go far above and beyond the simple creation of content.
What Mambo isn't!
Mambo is not a typical "portal" solution.
While Mambo can be modified or extended to provide this style of site this is not the goal of the project. Mambo is aimed at the more squarely at corporate websites or sites for small to medium businesses, families or personal sites.
The Mambo Development Team focuses on building a solid application framework rather than on add-ons that are typically found in many portal solutions. This keeps the Mambo core extremely lightweight and efficient, thus making it easier for anybody to extend Mambo through custom third party component and modules that directly serve their needs.

Is Mambo for me ?
We have a short little article that may help you evaluate Mambo and to help you determine the best CMS for your needs.
If you've come to this page, you have probably been surfing the web for hours, if not days, trying to find a trail of links that will lead you to the perfect CMS. You might have only just started your journey.
How do you determine which CMS is best for you?
There are a number of sites to help you determine the answer to this question:
- mamboforge.net/demo- mambo own demo server
- www.cmsmatrix.org- a site where you can do side-by-side comparisons of many of the most popular and lesser known systems
- www.opensourcecms.com- a site that has many demos running or a large number of systems
But is trying out the Mambo demos and getting a "nice feeling" about a system enough?
The answer is probably 'no'. You need to ask a number of other questions to ensure that when you invest your time in committing to a system, you receive a profitable return:
* Is there a healthy development team (to support the core framework)?
* Is there a healthy developer community (to provide custom addons, templates, etc)?
* Is there a healthy user community (to provide help and support and to provide the momentum for continued development)?
We are pleased that Mambo has all three.
To help you compare various systems, look at the following:
* Check that releases are recent and timely, that downloads any not years old (have a look at http://mamboforge.net/projects/mambo/)?
* Check that there are quality community sites supporting custom development and news ( have a look at mamboforge.net or work through the results of a web search for 'Mambo CMS' ).
* Check that there are well support forums or other communication networks to allow users to get help and share ideas ( have a look at forum.mamboserver.com ).
We wish you well on your quest to find a great content management system. Mambo, while it is a great CMS, is by no means perfect. But we can guarantee that it is constantly improving.
